South Africa The Rainbow Nation

South Africa is aptly hailed as the Rainbow Nation: black-maned lions framed against Kalahari dunes; powdery beaches lapped by two oceans; star-studded desert skies; jagged, lush mountains – this truly is a country of astounding diversity. From the awe-inspiring 'Smoke that Thunders' to the legendary 'Big Five' of Kruger and of course the iconic Table Mountain towering over the 'Fairest Cape in the World', there's a tempting plethora of stunning distractions. This is one of Africa's best safari destinations, offering the Big Five and more in accessible parks and reserves. In the Western Cape you will discover world-class wines, wonderful whale watching, contrasting landscapes, world class golf courses, as well as the magic of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, which meet at Africa's most southerly point.

Western Cape
The scenic splendour of the Western Cape has long been a drawcard in South Africa. This is where you’ll find the Cape Winelands and a beautiful stretch of coastline. The heart of the Western Cape is without doubt the city of Cape Town. With a distinct flavour of its own, the inner city is an eclectic mix of architectural styles that combine the past with the present in a mishmash of high-rise office blocks, Edwardian and Victorian buildings and narrow, cobblestone streets that give rise to fine examples of Cape Dutch design. The Western Cape's allure is not merely its expansive beaches, fashionable vineyards and effortless mountains. Its lesser-known regions like the valleys of the Klein Karoo, its untamed wilderness areas and numerous nature reserves are what draws those who want to explore the province's finer moments.

When to Go: Weather

The best time to visit Kruger and most wildlife parks is from May to September. This is the Dry season and animals congregate around waterholes and rivers. This is, in fact, the low season for tourism. South African school holidays should be avoided. The main holidays are in December. It is winter, so the mornings and nights are cold. May and September are wonderful because it is less cold and, especially in September, the wildlife viewing is excellent.
